Guns in churches

This Saturday a pastor in Kentucky is encouraging his parishoners to openly carry their guns to church. They will be having a picnic and a celebration of Americans' right to carry firearms. Other churches are planning protest "picnics". One pastor claims that this gun picnic is incompatible with the gospel, saying "Jesus never said, 'Go ahead. Make my day.'"

What do all of you think? Is celebrating our right to carry guns incompatible with the gospel?

I don't think it's incompatible per se, but I don't really see what our right to carry or not carry guns has to do with the gospel period.

It crosses the line between church and state. This is not a perceived moral issue which may/may not be supported by bibical text. The issue of the right to bear arms is a constitutional idea, not a biblical one. They need to be careful or the tax man cometh.

Re: …

The Bible tells us to live by the laws of the land as much as we can and to live peaceably one with another.

I see the argument that carrying a gun may prevent some civil and criminal disturbances but I tend to agree with Jinzy on this one.

I also defer to Jinzy on this.

I may have the Civil right to bear arms- but it had nothing to do with my personal spiritual belief system, and should not be my church's business.

Re: Guns in churches

Right after we moved back to the states, the TX legislature passed a law making it legal to bring concealed weapons to church. After living in a country with very little gun use, I confess I felt quite frightened. I actually worried about ministers whose sermons were not pleasing top the crowd as well as the congregrants who did not give enough. Picture the pastor pulling out his piece and commanding the congregation to dig deeper!

I know that cops carry their weapons everywhere, but shouldn't a house of worship be peaceful place??
